What are the best exercises to get into peak cardiovascular shape?

I’m wondering what the best exercises are to get into peak cardiovascular shape are. I don’t mean to necessarily "lose weight" but to get into tip top athletic cardio shape.

note: I don’t have hours to spend on marathon running, nor do I believe that’s necessary.
