Routine to Build Muscle?

Monday, August 30th, 2010

I’m 14 years old. 125 lbs. 5"6
I’m mostly meat and bones and I want to change it to muscle.
I’m currently running in cross country and we run minimum 2 miles a day max 8 miles with a 5-8 minute warm-up run before.

Here is my planned schedule:
1.Run after-school everyday in cross country (Mon-Sat)
2. Come home and lift (10lb)dumbbells: 3 Sets of 15 Reps (Wed-Sat)
3. Do 2 Sets of 20 Push-Ups Or 30 (Wed-Sat)
4. Drink chocolate milk & eat

Diet:
Take in a lot of protein.
Take in a lot of calories.
Avoid as much sugar as possible.

And question, are carbs(carbohydrates) good for you? Should I take in a lot of carbs?

I want to know if my routine is good and if I will be able to build nice upper body strength.
Thanks

Well dude, this is how I build muscle, im 16 btw. I written plan is great if you wan’t to stick with it, but the only problem is, is that you might tell your body your done working out, when it didn’t get a full workout. for like a week do low weights, with lots of reps. (#2 is a good idea for the first week) After that, I say raise the lbs on your dumbell. Reps tone your muscles, if you wan’t to GAIN muscles, go for big weights. Once your arm trembles and you can’t continue, thats when you know your done. Don’t end the workout if you can easily do 10 more reps. Also, pick up some protein shakes/mixes. I got a huge barrel of protein smoothie mix for only 20 bucks. It has 32g of protein plus the protein in the milk you mix it in. And as for your question about carbs. I don’t focus on carbs, and you probably shouldn’t worry bout it either. Don’t go out of your way to eat more/less carbs than you already have.

Anyone heard of the watermelon diet???? Would this work?

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

I am thinking about eating only watermelon for the next 3 months. I would eat 1 whole watermelon a day that weight like 7-10LB each. They cost just $.12 a pound for seedless so I would only spend $1.20 on food a day. Plus I will also be taking gummy vitamins.

So will this work and how much weight can I expect to lose by Oct? I am 5-9 230LB so I need to lose 30 lbs by OCT for a wedding.

Do.not.do.this. I totally get that you want to lose weight, I am too right now, but its TOTALLY unhealthy to only eat the same food for any period of time. You can ger mineral deficiancy, and my friend actually ended up in the hospital from not getting any protein. Watermelon = no protein. Try eating normal, just cut portions in half. Works amazing for me. I lost 2 pound in 5 days like that.

I’m having trouble with Calorie intake..?

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

I basically want to shed 4-5kg (10lb) off my body within a month or so before the end of August. I’m currently 86kg (189lb) and 5"11. I used to be quite fit etc. Simply put on a bit of weight since i turned 18 with all the take away binges and drinking.

I’ve done a bit of research and it’s "recommended" that i have roughly 2500 calories for my everyday activities? i’m not completely active i run probably twice a week and walk to and from work (15mins quite fast). The thing i can’t understand is i’m meant to shed about 500-1000 calories a day to obtain a weight loss of 1-2lb a week, and anything over that is supposedly unhealthy. However, i’ve been eating a healthy diet to try go below that calorie intake, but i’m only getting 1300-1600 calories max a day. I know most would say that’s a good thing - but am i supposed to drop 1000-1200 calories from my old intake straight away? I feel fine in general, and i don’t seem to be lacking energy whatsover - is this too drastic a change if i feel alright? Should i try eat some higher calorie food to avoid slowing my metabolism and keep it within the 500-1000 range or is my Diet alright to keep the metabolish ticking over?

7:30 - 2 eggs, either raw or scrambled with a bit of milf
- glass of low fat milk

10:00 - 2 pieces of wholemeal bread

12 - Tuna Sushi/cucumber (8 pieces)

3:00 - chicken (roughly 100g) with salad (carrot, beetroot, lettuce, tomato onion)

6 - some straight tuna or chicken (100g) before dinner.

730 or 8 - dinner (usually some curry or pasta. Or red meat wiht peas and mash)

I drink a LOT of water throughout the day - so i don’t think that’s the problem.

Also - with exercise, should i be leaving a minimum of 1500 calories for my body to function properly or is 1500 the minimum intake and i can exercise and burn below that calorie intake without causing more harm than good?

Thanks.

you would eat around 1500, with exercise. never go below 1200 or above 1700.
