Easy Ways to Maintain a Healthy Diet
Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010
Nowadays, people are becoming increasingly more conscious about what they eat and are always on the lookout for healthier alternatives. There’s good reason why people are getting more and more concerned with health issues. With blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity and many other diseases haunting us in the news almost every week, we have grown to become more vigilant and more careful eaters.
Several popular restaurants and fast food chains acknowledge this powerful trend, and they are now offering healthier options in their menu. Even pizza parlors and ice cream corners offer more wholesome choices to meet the population’s growing health demands.
Making Healthy Food Choices
Fruits and vegetables are your best options. Eat as much fresh fruits and vegetables as possible. As these are known to be high in fiber, they can be very helpful in lowering the levels of blood cholesterol in the body. Although you need to take in a certain amount of fiber daily, one must not do it abruptly. Slowly increasing fiber intake to allow the body to adjust accordingly is recommended.
Choosing lean meats and poultry, less the skin, is a good practice. When eating poultry, stick to the white meat, which is the healthiest part. Slow cooking meat makes it tender and succulent while still leaving the flavor and the nutrients to the food. You can also go for the healthy alternative sources of protein such as beans, nuts and peas.
If you feel like having a quick snack or a dessert, try to avoid cakes, cookies, doughnuts, muffins and pies. Stay away from those with too much refined sugar. Opt for fresh fruit slices or mashed potatoes.
Cooking Healthy
Decades ago, the different kinds of cooking oil are virtually unheard of. We used to fry our food with just any kind of oil we can grab in the supermarket. Things have come a long way since then. More people are now acutely aware about how olive oil, canola oil, sunflower oil and flax seed oil are different from palm oil, coconut oil, butter and other vegetable oils. Many people even go a step further and no longer use oil to cook their foods; preferring instead to use other innovative methods of cooking their foods.
In recent years, Crock Pot recipes have increased significantly in popularity. With its even heat distribution and constant heating style, the Crock Pot locks up the food’s nutrients more effectively. The result, therefore, is a meal that is rich in both rich in flavor and nutrients.
Slow cooker recipes range from roasted pork to basic pasta to yummy desserts. Even food for the littlest member of the family can be prepared using the slow cooker. There is no need to worry about the safety of commercial baby food as you can prepare your baby’s meals right at home with your Crock Pot.
Once you adopt a healthy diet, try to make it a point that it is not just a fad you are trying to follow. It may not be very easy embracing a healthy diet as a part of your lifestyle, especially if you have not been used to it. Just remember that the pangs of adjustment are only temporary. Things will be much easier as you progress.

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010Losing Weight Stories - The Fortune Cookie Diet
Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010
Last week my wife and I went to our favorite Chinese restaurant, and at the end of the meal, we opened our fortune cookies as usual. But when I saw my fortune this time, it was incredible.
Finally, I thought to myself, a Diet plan I can follow! It doesn’t have any foods I have to avoid. It doesn’t make me count calories. It doesn’t make me measure portions. I don’t have to go to any meetings. All right, I can do that! All I have to do is figure out the right way to use this fortune that’s been written especially for me. I can’t go wrong!
You see, it said:
YOU WILL HAVE A NEW LOOK THAT WILL DO WONDERS.
How could I miss? That phrase, NEW LOOK, flashed and blinked in front of my eyes, I wanted it so bad I could almost taste it. All I had to do was figure out exactly what to do with this incredible fortune to get my NEW LOOK. I thought, OK, I’ll try putting it in my wallet so I can keep it close at hand all day and see if that works. So, into my wallet it went, right in front of that OLD LOOK driver’s license picture. That way, I could carry it with me everywhere I went. If I have it with me all the time, that’s a good thing, right? That surely ought to be enough, right?
Right?
Wrong the first time.
OK, time for a new plan. Maybe if I tape it to the corner of my mirror. I think the problem with having it in my wallet was that I wasn’t reading it every day. You know, out of sight, out of mind. Or maybe it’s just because I was trying to fly by the seat of my pants, and my fortune didn’t like being sat on. So, I taped it to my mirror. I got up every morning and I read my own personal fortune, promising me my NEW LOOK. Every night before I went to bed, I read it again. I was so sure I’d found the magic key this time. That should have worked, right?
Right?
You guessed it. Wrong the second time.
Well, you know what they say about trying again. So, I tried my third and very best plan. I taped it smack in the middle of my steering wheel, so I could read it all the time when I was driving. I have a really long commute (both ways) so I figured I’d increase my opportunities to incorporate my fortune right into my brain cells, and finally, I would see that NEW LOOK. Because, you know, they PROMISED! That should have worked, right?
Right?
Well, my car has a NEW LOOK, but I look pretty much the same, under all these bandages.
So, you can take time to thank me now, because I’ve saved you a lot of work, See, you can cross the Fortune Cookie Diet off your ways to lose weight without even having to try it.
Believe me, it’s just too dangerous!

Gluten is a special type of protein that is commonly found in our day-to-day food items. Further, one must hold on to this diet for several months rather than a few weeks. While the gluten free diet the child intakes does its job well, it takes a long time to remove the gluten that is already consumed. In certain cases however, people do find immediate results.
It needs a lot of planning to follow gluten free diet. The regularly used cereals like rye, wheat, and barley contain high content of gluten. Therefore, it is also found in most types of bread. Yet, grains such as wild rice, corn, buckwheat, millet, amaranth, quinoa, teff, oats, soybeans, and sunflower seeds contain are surely gluten free.
Certain vinegars and sauces also contain gluten. The artificial flavorings and many other snacks & cookies available in the markets also contain gluten.

Gluten free diet can be quite expensive to follow as these items are sold mostly at the specialty or health stores. While this might get too heavy for your pocket, nowadays major grocery stores also deal in these products. Gluten free flour, pancake mix, waffles, cookies, snacks, and many other foods are also now readily available.
Hence, it is advisable that parents make a group and shop in bulk for these products. This makes the costs relatively cheaper and later the families can share the food items.
Planning economically, it is also convenient to cook gluten free food at home. The recipes are available at many common resources like the internet & cook books. A whole lot of information in this regard can also be gathered from the book shop or the library near by.
Children suffering with Autism can consume meat, fruits, fish, vegetables, eggs, nuts, etc. as these are all gluten free. To make this diet interesting for the child, one might plan children’s beloved snacks made out of gluten free ingredients like muffins & cookies made of gluten free flour. Once this practice gets into the system of the household, it gets easier.
The dairy products contain casein that the autistic children are commonly allergic to. So while following this diet, many people minimize or stop the diary products as well. Yet, it is advised that you should get done your child’s allergy testing. Your doctor can guide you more on the same.
