What are good diet foods to take to a barbecue?

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

My friends are having a get together this weekend and they just recently went on a diet. I want to take some food but don’t want to interrupt their Diet. Any suggestions on what diet foods I can take.

Chicken is very low in fat, just marinade it the day before and leave in fridge until you leave for BBQ. Fish and shelfish are great BBQ’d, especially things like mackerel and prawns as they are very tasty and low in fat. You could make vegetable kebabs with onions, mushrooms, peppers and tomato’s take corn on the cobs to bbq, make a salad……

What kind of diet/foods naturally make you stronger/bigger?

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

I know that diet needs to be combined with exercise and stuff in order to build muscle, but what kind of foods would naturally build up muscle when combined with exercise?

Optimal nutritional intake.

Try to get an appropriate proportion of carbs-proteins-fats. Don’t rely too heavily on processed food, try to eat very nutrient-rich foods.

Proteins that come with Omega 3s are great. We tend to lack omega 3s in our Diets, and I believe this causes a lot of problems. Fish are good sources, flax seed also has omega 3 I think.

Eat fruits and veg rather than breads and other overly processed carbs. Fruits release glucose much more slowly, and whatever you can do to reduce insulin spikes is ultimately good for you in a lot of ways. Whole grains, fruits. "Whole of the grain".

Some foods are better cooked, some are better raw. I think carrots and tomatoes break down in a good way when cooked. Other things tend to lose nutrients to the cooking medium (water, if boiling) or evaporated through the steam. Not necessarily bad, especially if you trap those nutrients with a lid and use the extra water as a base for a sauce, or maybe a broth later on, it’s all good.

Eat rich natural foods - rich in nutrients. Kale, chard. Berries. Lean meat (chicken, fish). Avocados! Apples. Cook with olive oil instead of butter. Try to get more unsaturated fats than you do saturated. (some seafood, like smoked oysters, or things stored in oil in a can, have high saturated fat.)

Avocados are awesome. Nuts and berries are fantastic. Eggs and chicken are great. Yogurt is awesome, it really is a helpful food, no doubt. Try to limit your milk, cheese to some degree.

Why do companies get away with false diet foods?

Like "Diet Coke" "I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter" and so on.. When the truth is that the real thing is better for you than fake substitute products that your body can’t even process?

Because people are willing to fall for it, and pay extra for it. If people would make educated choices, there would be no demand for Frankenfoods.

Is it possible to have a vegetarian diet using only fresh whole foods?

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

I cannot seem to stomach the taste of meat anymore. I have been working for about 2 years to put my husband and I on an all natural whole foods diet. Most of the people I know who are vegetarian eat a lot of junk food and vegetarian meat products, like veggie burgers and bacon. Can you be a healthy vegetarian without using "pretend" foods?

Absolutely. I have several friends in the same boat as you. They hate the taste of meat, and cannot figure why a vegetarian would want something designed to taste like meat. Lots of a variety of veggies, whole grains, and nuts & legumes can produce a perfectly healthy Diet, though if you are vegan, you may need to take a supplement of B12, since it is mostly found in animal products. Keep on with what you are doing and ignore the meatless meat eaters around you! For extra protein, tofu and/or soy or almond milk are great additions. Tofu will take on the taste of whatever you put with it, so it can be used in soups, stews, salad dressings, "milk shakes" and simply cooked after marinating to flavor. Good luck and happy eating!

What kind of diet/foods did the Greeks eat a long time ago? Like during the spartan/persian wars?

Friday, May 21st, 2010

I know they ate VERY healthy, and a Mediterranean diet is proven to be the healthiest of all.

I want to model my diet after them in that time. So far I believe they ate:

Yogurt
Grapes
Lamb
Olives
Tomatoes
Milk

WHAT ELSE IS THERE?!?!

olives [especially olive oil was used and eaten with everything]
figs
cheese
breads [barley & wheat]
fish
eggs [chicken and quail]
raisins
pomegranates
honey
seafood [oysters, lobster, mussels, squid, octopus]
onions
lentils
peas [garden, sweet, chick, etc.]
venison [including wild birds and hares]
cabbage
nuts
poultry [chicken, goose, duck, quail]
pork [especially sausages made from pork meat]

spices used - cumin, coriander, oregano, dill, parsley, mint, pine cones, fennel, aniseed, poppy seed, garlic

beef, goat & lamb - was expensive and the poorer populace only ate it on festival days. Fish, seafood, poultry and wild game were their main sources of protein.

milk [goat, ewe, cow] - was very rarely drunk, it was considered barbaric and milk was used for making cheese. Pyriatē was a thick rather sour milk that was drunk and is today commonly mistaken for yogurt.

wine - was drunk every day, even with breakfast. It was however always watered, drinking it "straight" like we do today, was considered barbaric by the Greeks [or Hellenes as Herodotus called them].

tomatoes - were not eaten in ancient Greece, since they didn’t have them. Tomatoes originally came from South America and were introduced to Europe by either Columbus and/or Cortés during the 1500’s.

You should look into the Turkish and Italian diets as well if you want a fuller range of Mediterranean cooking. It is healthy and delicious! You could also check on the Spanish and Algerian diets.

Edit: also remember that the modern Mediterranean Diet and the ancient Greco-Roman diets differ considerably. There are many more foodstuffs [such as tomatoes] available and used in Mediterranean cooking today.

Authentic Italian Food - Debunking The Myth That It Is Fattening

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Italian food has got a bad reputation among the health conscious because it is thought to be fattening. In reality Italian food can be the basis of a healthy diet. Italian food is the part of what is often referred to as the Mediterranean diet that has been shown to be good for weight control and heart health.

The food pyramid that is now recommended by doctors is based on carbohydrate food. It contains plenty of fruit and vegetables, oily fish and only small amounts of dairy foods and red meat. That could be a description of the Italian diet.

We often think of pizzas dripping in cheese and loaded with meat, or pasta served in rich cheese sauces when we think of Italian food. But real Italian food is not like that. If we move away from this commercial variations on Italian food and get back to real thing then we have a healthy Diet.

Italian food is not just about pasta and it is certainly not just about pizza. It is rich in all those things that are lacking in the diet that most of us eat.

The modern Western diet is typically low in the healthy omega oils that are contained in oily fish such as sardines and anchovies that make up an important part of Italian cooking. Doctors recommend that we eat oily fish at least once a week. There are any number of appetizing Italian dishes that call for oily fish.

Fresh vegetables are an essential part of any Italian meal. They are eaten raw in salads and cooked in a variety of flavor filled ways. The common complaint that vegetables are boring does not apply to Italian food.

Fruit is almost always served at Italian meals. It is an essential part of the sweet course.

Research has shown that eating soup is a good way of controlling weight. There are a wide range of Italian soups that will all make a good first course of simple meal in themselves.

Olive oil and garlic which are essential to Italian food have been shown to have a good effect on the heart. The same is true of red wine.

The carbohydrates in Italian food such as pasta, rice, polenta and bread, have become unpopular as people have turned to the Atkins Diet which avoids all carbohydrates. But the Atkins Diet is far from healthy in the long term. A healthy diet must include some carbohydrates.

Italian food is not just about pasta. italians love bread, polenta and rice too. Polenta is especially good in weight control because it has a low glycemic index. That is to say it releases sugar into the blood slowly. It leaves us feeling fuller for longer. A first course of polenta and tomato sauce is a good way to start a meal.

Rice has a slightly higher glycemic index but eaten in small portions is a healthy food.
Pasta need not be fattening.

Italian bread is typically lower in salt than other bread. The texture of breads such as foccaccia and ciabatta is much denser than most commercial bread so that a small amount will satisfy the appetite. Nor do Italians normally eat butter with their bread.

If you avoid smothering your pasta, rice or polenta in rich sauces and avoid butter on your bread then they are healthy foods that are healthy foods that are low in fat.

Is a Raw Diet for Dogs Really Better?

Friday, April 30th, 2010

What are the best diet foods for my Golden Retriever?

Monday, April 26th, 2010

I have a 5 year old Golden and he is a tad bit over weight and I would like to help him loose some. What are the best quality foods for a dog like him.

Please no store-brand food.

We use Nature’s Select (or something, I can’t really remember off the top of my head). They have a low fat kibble that you can get in different flavors and sizes. Because it is a high quality food, though, you should also feed less of it. I would reduce your serving size by about half a cup or, keep it at its current measurement but counterbalance it with increased exercise.

You can pick it up at Petco and (probably) Petsmart.
