Mark 6:52

For they considered not the miracle of the loaves:
for their heart was hardened.

Question about cholesterol lowering crestor?

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Today i went to the doctor and was prescribed crestor for my high cholesterol. I am 24 years old. My cholesterol has always been high (over 300) since i was 10. Despite Diet and exercise. I am not over weight, I weight 122, 5′4 (not overweight). I believe its hereditary. my total cholesterol was 312. LDL 224, HDL 73 and triglycerides 89. I told my dad and he said i should only take the crestor for 3 weeks and then stop because it can cause liver problems. The doctor did not say that. What should I do.

High cholesterol by itself is not associated with heart disease.

As a result, what your doctor prescribed is a drug with extremely negative side effects for a problem that may not exist.

Your HDL/triglycerides ratio, one of the best indicators of heart disease, is excellent.

Did you happen to take the VAP version of the cholesterol test? There are actually sub-categories of HDL and LDL. The reason I am asking is that the VAP test breaks down your cholesterol into those subcategories. For cholesterol particles, bigger is better for both HDL and LDL. If your LDL particles are mostly the big, fluffy kind, then you have nothing to worry about. Other the other hand, if your LDL are mostly the small dense kind, then it is a big danger sign. I do not believe that you have an over abundance of the small dense LDL (that usually happens when a person has a bad HDL/triglycerides ratio), but best get tested and make sure.

If you did not get a VAP test the first time around, I suggest you get one.

There is actually a shorthand method of determining the particle size of your LDL:

http://www.ajconline.org/article/S0002-9149%2805%2902214-9/abstract

Based on that methodology, your ratio is 1.2, an incredibly good rating.

May I also suggest that you look into getting a different doctor? Your present one seem to think high cholesterol by itself is bad and statins should be given out like candy.

Lastly, I suggest you do some research yourself on cholesterol and statins. You may find that conventional wisdom (high cholesterol is bad) is very far from reality.

Fastest and healthiest way to lower cholesterol for a diabetic?

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

My husband is 23yrs and has been type 1 diabetic since the age of 7yrs. Normally his health has been relatively good, but with his recent diabetic review has been told he has exceptionally high cholesterol. He was previously a vegetarian, but the doctor believes his change in Diet over one year has nothing to do with the sudden rise, and puts it down to stress at work. This is also stopping the production of creatine, essential for muscle development and maintenance. He is fit and exercises by running on average 10 miles a day (to and from work) and eats home grown veg and lean meats etc. What are we doing wrong I wonder? Stress really can kill! Does anyone have any advice on what more we can do to drop his cholesterol in a healthy manner? At the moment, we cannot reduce his stress at work, but maybe someone has good advice for anti stress tips at home or particular foods and exercises specifically designed to lower cholesterol? He also has a heart murmur, so we are even more keen on lowering the cholesterol levels. Most grateful to any help. Thank you.

From a wife that wants her husband to stick around.

WOW, I can’t believe he has high cholesterol after all that exercise. Because that’s what lowered my cholesterol. Don’t ever take Statin drugs . They are killers. But a alternative is Nicotinic Acid.(niacin)
1,000 to 3,000 mg. It depends. It does the same as statins but without the side effects. The only side effect for me is flushing. But 1 aspirin 30 min. before take the Nicotinic Acid stops the flushing. The plain is the safest. Over doses can cause liver damage. Do it with the doctors overseeing. There is a difference in Niacin’s so be sure it Nicotinic Acid. The one that prevents flushing does not work at all.
Good luck

Lower Your Cholesterol For A Healthier Life

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that the body needs to function normally. Your body uses cholesterol to produce certain hormones and make vitamin D. It also produces bile acids that digest fat. But your body only needs a small amount of cholesterol to perform these functions. Too much cholesterol in your bloodstream will start to adhere to the artery walls and form blockages. These blockages are the cause of heart attacks and strokes.

It is important that you keep your cholesterol at a healthy level. While high cholesterol can be hereditary, a lot of our cholesterol problems come from the food we eat and lack of exercise.

The best way to lower your cholesterol is to lose weight. Being overweight interrupts the bodys metabolism causing the body to hang onto too much fat. Following a low fat, low cholesterol Diet and getting more exercise will help you lose weight and lower your cholesterol.

Here is a guide on what foods to eat and what foods to limit:

Food you should eat:-

* 5 servings per day of a variety of fruits and vegetables.
* 6 servings per day of whole grain breads, rice and pasta. Oatmeal is especially beneficial.
* 2 to 4 servings of fat free or low fat milk products.
* 6 ounces of lean meats or skinless poultry per day.
* Beans and peas.
* Nuts and seeds in limited amounts.
* Unsaturated vegetable oils. But limit the amount of margarine and spreads made from them.

Foods to Limit:-

* Whole milk, creams and ice cream.
* Butter, egg yolks and cheese.
* Untrimmed fatty meats and organ meats.
* Processed meats such as Bologna, hot dogs, salami and sausage.
* Bakery goods made with saturated fats and egg yolks.
* Coconut oils, palm oils and palm kernal oil which are saturated fats.
* Solid fats such as shortening, partially hydrogenated margarine and lard.
* Fried foods.

Lowering cholesterol does not mean that you cut out all the fats. You just exchange them. The above guidelines should help you determine how to do this.

There is a lot of focus on cutting back on the fats in the food we eat but did you know that there are beverages that can help lower cholesterol? Studies have shown that green tea has a lot of powerful antioxidants that help lower cholesterol and can even lower blood pressure.

Orange juice contains folic acids that help lower homocysteine levels in the body. High homocysteine levels can cause cholesterol to change into oxidized low density lipoprotein which can damage the arteries. It can also make blood clot easier and increase the risk of blockages.

Grape juice is loaded with certain antioxidants that help prevent red blood cells from clumping together to form clots.

Research has proven that having 1 to 3 ounces of wine a day can lower your risk of heart attack. But do not drink it if you have an alcohol dependency problem or high blood pressure.

Keeping your cholesterol at a healthy level takes some effort on your part. Lose weight, exercise, quit smoking and eat healthily. This may seem like a lot to some but you only have one heart. It is your responsibility to take good care of it.

Bust your Way to a Healthy Cholesterol Level

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

It’s very important to learn what Cholesterol is because it can be good or bad. Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in animal fats, whole milk, yolk of the egg, liver and kidney. It is also manufactured by your liver. Despite its bad reputation, cholesterol is vital for health and is a component of most body tissues, including the brain, nervous system, liver and blood. However, it is carried by lipoprotiens as solid fat in our blood and it leads to clogged arteries causing strokes and heart attacks.

There are two types of cholesterol. HDL (high-density lipoproteins) cholesterol is called “good” cholesterol because it helps remove the “bad” LDL (low-density lipoproteins) cholesterol from the blood. LDL cholesterol is the type that sticks to the artery walls and causes cardiovascular problems.

You can lower the risk of heart related aliments and other health hazards by simply regulating your cholesterol level. It’s important to check the risk factors, which can build up your cholesterol level as it should be kept in the healthy limits. People who are at no risk of coronary heart disease have their total cholesterol levels in 150 to 160 mg/dl and a LDL cholesterol levels below 80 mg/dl.

A healthy Diet low in saturated fat and rich in soy protein helps lower cholesterol and may help reduce the risk of heart disease.

Some healthy eating tips to help lower your cholesterol:-

Don’t fry your food - try other ways of cooking your food; eg boil, steam, grill, poach.

Choose lean meat and cut the fat off poultry, cook in either sunflower oil or olive oil.

Ensure that you eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, at least 5 portions a day.

It has been found that soluble fibre, which can be found in oats, barley, lentils and other pulses, has the advantage of being able to absorb bile acids which are rich in cholesterol.

Cut down on your fat intake by choosing low-fat or fat-free foods.

Salmon is a high source of Omega 3 oils which have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol.

A regular course of exercise is also important for lowering your cholesterol levels. Swimming, running, tennis, aerobics and dancing help to strengthen the heart, get the blood pumping and helps towards healthy cholesterol levels. Experts recommend a minimum of 30 minutes a day. If you can’t manage that then do what you can. Start on 15 minutes and then build up, try to exercise at the same time every day, it will then become part of your daily routine.

Remember:- You need a certain amount of cholesterol to live, not all cholesterol is bad for you.. Know your numbers: less than 200 mg/dl total cholesterol is considered desirable, 200-239 borderline high, and 240 or more is high. If your total cholesterol is less than 200 mg/dl, your heart attack risk is relatively low, unless you have other risk factors.
