Beating any addiction entirely on your own is very difficult, because the willpower of which you speak comes from the addicted brain. You are already deeply neurally programmed to turn to alcohol for a sense of well-being. Only years of relearning will get you to a place of comfort without alcohol. That is a long time to be on your own, with your own thoughts. You really have to look at why it is so important to do this on your own. For example, why was it not a problem to ask total strangers for advice? That is all AA really is.
References :
You need to visit the bad side of alcohol. Dress real crappy and hang out with the bums and get reall drunk. See what rock bottom really is and build that picture in your mind then tell yourself you must rise above that and never fall so low. Or hell it may be appealing and you could change careers and be a whino. There are pros and cons for each. I've had friends turn to bums and I gave them rides to shelters. So then and there I've always monitored my drinking respectivly.
References :
Keep a journal. I know it sounds cheesy, but you'll start to really figure out why you want it. Why you need the break from reality. It's become a hobby, right? Finding a new one to replace the drinking helps, too. Golf, cooking, movies, coaching kids, anything. Something that you can find more rewarding. You know?
References :
If you want help to stop drinking have a friend or family member who will be willing to go along with you to help you remind yourself that you don't want to drink. That is what a couple of my friends do to stop them from drinking
