Does a Banana before FBS/RBS blood test effect the results?
Hi,
My doctor asked me to do a FBS/RBS SERUM blood test,
My blood sample was taken at 9:30 AM,
But i had a banana 20 minutes before it ( I didn’t know that i had to Fast )
My results is 99.91 mg/dl normal range is [55 - 115]
Is it kind of high?
Or it is that sweet banana? or should i watch my Diet?
I have nobody in my whole family who is Diabetic..
Im 174 pounds , 5.87 feets
Regards,
Normal glucose results vary from lab to lab. The ADA states that a normal FBS is 70-99mg/dl and a RBS is 70-125mg/dl. The ADA also states that a person is diabetic if their FBS is > or = to 126mg/dl and RBC is > or = to 200mg/dl.
FBS and RBS are two different tests. The banana you are 20 minutes before they drew the blood will not effect the results of the RBS. RBS measures blood sugar regardless of when you last ate. FBS on the other hand measures blood sugar after you have been fasting for the last 8 hours (MUST NOT EAT OR DRINK FOR 8 HOURS BEFORE BLOOD DRAW).
You stated the normal range is 55-115mg/dl. A blood sugar of 55mg/dl (where I work and most places) is considered hypoglycemic; which is WAY TOO LOW. You may want to recheck with your physician if that range is correct. But like I said, normal blood sugar levels differ from lab to lab. Regarding your level of 99mg/dl….that is very good and according to the ADA, you are not considered diabetic.
Hope this helps!

You need to tell the doctor this.

I think you’re good. Yes, a banana before a FBS (FASTING blood sugar) will affect your reading. A banana has a lot of sugar and would have increased your reading, so having a 99 20 minutes after a banana is probably exactly normal. RBS (Random Blood Sugar) reading of 99 after a banana is excellent, IMO. But, again, I’m not a doc. I’m just a diabetic.. and I don’t think that you are.

If you eat before a fasting test, it will effect the results.
If this happens, put the test off till the next day.
Let your doctor know and retake the test.
