The Feingold diet eliminates these:

Artificial (synthetic) coloring
Artificial (synthetic) flavoring
Aspartame (Nutrasweet, an artificial sweetener)
Artificial (synthetic) preservatives BHA, BHT, TBHQ

Have you also looked into gluten free? As a child I was put on the Feingold diet for ADD and it didn't help. The only thing that has ever helped has been going gluten free.

Edit: I thought it was pretty obvious. You avoid prepackaged, overly processed crap that most parents feed their kids today. Basically if it comes in a box, question it, read the ingredients and then decide. Whole fruits and veggies are always great snacks. Meals and the occasional treat should be home made, preferrably using ingredients made from scratch.
References :
http://www.feingold.org/pg-overview.html
