I am getting tired of my vegetarian diet and im cheating , help?
I have been a vegetarian for just 3 months so please dont be hard on me . I have tried the tofu and its just tastes horrible and i find it disgusting . Garden burgers are starting to gross me out as well and im getting bored of the same taste , eggs are the same this vegetarian lifestyle feels repetitive to me and i have cheated by eating meat 5 times in these 3 months . I really love animals and hate the abuse they are put through for our own taste pleasure but at the same time i feel so dissatisfied with the lack of taste of these created products for vegetarians , they just feel so unnatural and processed it feels as if im still not having a healthy diet by eating them .and im scared now because im getting colds which i almost never get and was wondering if it has to do with my defenses and my protein intake . I dont know what to do , i dont want to keep eating meat , but at the same time its like im missing something on my Diet . what do i do ? what products are there for vegetarian that dont taste so freaking bad ? help?
Try eating Quoron brand. You can find this brand at WholeFoodsMarkets and the Sunflower Market. They make chicken nuggets, chicken burgers and breaded chicken breast, ALL WITH FAKE MEAT! And they taste exactly the same as real chicken, but their more tender. I kid you not.
While your there at whole foods venture even further into their frozen foods section. Amy’s products have fake meatloaf meals, they have vegetarian pizzas, vegetarian burritos with fake meat, and enchilladas with fake meat. Tofu is nasty I will admit that. But all of these other foods are not, they even have stir fry meals with fake meat. But the fake meat taste nearly the same. Most frozen foods in the frozen foods secton at WholeFoodsMarket are vegetarian, you just have to look closely to see that, because they all look like real meat.
You should try purely decadent ice cream, it’s soy ice ceam. I personally think this ice cream taste better than real ice cream, the flavors are better as well.
Please stay vegetarian, it will keep you alive longer.
BY THE WAY.
I am vegan and I get more protein than meat eaters. It’s hard to believe, but you’d be surprised at all of the foods that have protein in them. And meat isn’t even a complete protein. It takes too long to digest and is horrible for your body. If we were built to eat this, it wouldn’t be killing us, and our itestines wouldn’t be 20 feet long, real carnivores have intestines only 9 feet long, so the meat doesn’t sit in their bodies and create diseases.

Eat Meat!! Find a local farm or a collective where you can purchase meat. They will treat the animals well and when the time comes kill them as humanely as possible. I don’t agree with the vegetarian lifestyle and I have never seen it to be a healthy choice. You need protein and although you can get it from sources other than meat - you don’t get enough. If you want to be mostly meatless have fish, and beans. You can make beans with pasta, rice, in a million different ways. Look into those local farm shares - you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
By the way - this question was on the main page for me. I don’t think you’ll get many more "meat eater" opinions.

Real food is all you need. Protein is in EVERYTHING–The average American gets something like three times the amount of what they actually need.
Eggs–Do you eat egg whites or the entire egg? I quit the whole egg awhile back, so it’s been awhile–When I was eating egg whites, I’d actually put spices in ‘em. Nutmeg and onion powder. Yes, together. Yes, it sounds weird. Yes, it’s delicious. Start with a VERY little bit. Don’t know how it’d be to season the entire egg, yolk and all, as I’ve never done that… Couldn’t hurt to try?
Try making a stir-fry. You don’t need a fancy wok (though they help). Any vegetables you want–Throw ‘em in!
Tofu–I went on a tofu binge and it fucked up my menstrual cycle (though who knows, it could’ve been coincidental, though with what I don’t know), so now i don’t eat it anymore. Never really cared for it anyways. It is not a staple in my house, AT ALL.
Things I eat: Rice, pasta, bread products, vegetables, fruits, seeds, …

Watch "Earthlings",.. then milk and meat will look even more repulsive.
Learn to cook more,.. buy cook books. I can’t imagine missing meat,.. I am vegan and I found being vegetarian the easiest thing in the world, but I really like the taste of tofu, so I guess I’m lucky. There is so much more tasty food out there other than meat. Tofu doesn’t have to be your protein source, neither does eggs. Try beans, lentils, nuts etc. My grandma always makes dahl(lentil curry thing) when she comes over, it’s really nice.
As for processed vege foods,.. I eat tofu, but I never buy soy cheese, or fake bacon or whatever, that kinda seems gross.
Maybe stirfry and noodles,.. it’s easy and tastes pretty good. Vegetarian and vegan food can be really tasty, you just need to get used to cooking. Try different recipes, add different herbs and spices… you’ll get there. You’re doing well. Also, I find that alot of tofu tastes different. I know that the tofu they use on inari sushi is awesome..
Good luck, and stick to it:)

Try staying away from meat substitutes for a while. Get your protein from things like beans, lentils, quinoa, and nuts instead. Google the Vegetarian Society for ideas on good sources of protein. Join a forum for veg*ans (my personal favorite is Post Punk Kitchen at http://www.theppk.com) and look for ideas on tasty things to eat there. Get a multivitamin supplement (just be careful to get one without gelatin), and be sure to take it every day, and that should help you not get sick so often.
My personal favorite things to eat for protein are three-bean salads, lentil soup with basil, veggies, and bite-sized bits of bread toasted in olive oil, and… well, anything with beans, really. Kidney beans are the highest-protein kind I’m aware of, but garbanzo beans are good too, and I’ve always been very fond of black beans.

I understand eating the same foods gets very boring and it is hard to stick with it when you are bored. I feed a family of 6 people, 4 vegans and 2 meat eaters and my 15 yr old vegan is very picky and so are my little ones and my meat eaters hate a lot of vegetables so I REALLY understand. I have to cook food that pleases them all and it can be difficult. I post my most successful recipes and will give you some now. They have pictures and the recipes so you can decide if they look good before you even try them. Now my husband and 5 yr old both hate tofu normally but the lasagna I make is wonderful and everyone (I mean meat eaters and everyone) loves it so you might want to get brave and try it. Here are a few that might work for you. Maybe if you find new foods you like you can stick with it.

There is a wonderful cookbook by Donna Klein — "Supermarket Vegan" — which has WONDERFUL recipes that are easy and whose ingredients are found at most supermarkets. Even if you aren’t a good cook, you will get some great ideas from this book. Good luck! I love my vegan diet…I can’t stop eating

I mean I don’t understand, there are so many recipes and so many things that you can do, and you think its so "disgusting" but really whats disgusting is that you would actully get down to "cheating" by eatting meat? Thats just horrible, if you really cared- you would eat ANYTHING else.

To be honest, your diet sounds boring and repetitive, so there is no wonder you are resorting to old favorites(meat). You are missing out on so many great dishes by not branching out past faux meat and tofu. There is a lot more to vegetarian meals than fake meat.
I would suggest getting a few cookbooks. There are cookbooks with recipes from everything from quick and easy all the way to gourmet meals. When I first went vegetarian I relied on many of the same recipes over and over. As time passed I found new recipes(either on the internet, cookbooks, by modifying old recipes, etc), and I can now go weeks without eating the same thing.
Most faux meat does not taste good in my opinion. It is ok as a once and awhile food. When you ate meat I’m sure that you didn’t rely on frozen or pre-made meals every day, the same should apply now.
I would suggest going to the library and getting a few recipe books. You can copy out the recipes you think you may like. The internet also has many vegetarian recipe pages.

I agree with what others have said - stop eating so many fake meat products and go buy yourself some good vegetarian cookbooks. How To Cook Everything Vegetarian is a good starting one if you don’t have much experience cooking. The variety of vegetarian foods is tremendous - you could literally eat a new vegetarian meal every day for the rest of your life without repeating one - so there is no reason to feel so bored with your diet.
http://www.amazon.com/How-Cook-Everything-Vegetarian-Meatless/dp/0764524836/
Also, it sounds like part of the reason you’re getting bored is that you’re worried about your protein intake and trying to eat too much protein as a result. Protein is in almost everything we eat, even fruit, and the average American actually gets twice the recommended daily allotment of protein, so a protein deficiency is extremely unlikely and you can stop forcing yourself to eat so much fake meat and eggs.
If you’re getting colds, it might mean that your iron intake is a bit low, though. Eat more green leafy veggies like spinach and romaine lettuce, beans and legumes such as lentils and split peas, and nuts and seeds.

i’m talking from personnel experience so trust me i used to be vegan at that time i had read so many "evidence" about the health benefits of a vegan diet(almost no disease, lot of energy , good for animals" i read so many theories about the vegan diet i almost became an expert i thought i would be healtier, happier etc. 6 months later after starting the vegan diet : went from muscular to as skinny as a toothpick (looked like i was about to die according to my parents) , no energy whatsoever, no sex drive, very pale skin, you could see the bones in my face, grumpy , always hungry no matter how much i ate, etc. food gurus might tell you that the vegan diet has all you need but strong evidence show that you lack: protein, calcium, vitamin a, d, and fat soluble vitamins, iron(a lot) , magnesium , essential fatty acids (only in fish omega 3 and 6 , enzymes to help with all chemical reactions in the body and many other things. many people have had serious problems with this diet i’m a guy but girls have misscarriages, their period stops, and other things (already mentioned above) i know a lot of things about nutrition and now my health is very good , i’m muscular(i have to i play basketball), always have energy , never tired , no headaches, physical ailment nothing. secret. i aonly eat natural food : a lot of meat (yes nothing satisfies your hunger better than animal food fish, poultry, chicken and it’s low in calory so it helps you lose weight tremendously while cutting down on carbs wich make you gain weight ), lot of fruits, 4 cups of green tean every day, lot of water, basically an omnivorous diet but no junk food ,no sodas,no biscuits just natural foods . tribes in africa eat that way and have no diseases at all . so forget about those vegan know it alls anf follow my advice if you’re fat you’ll become normal ,too skinny you’ll become normal as well with this diet you’ll basically reach your ideal health and bodyweight.by the way if you believe in god then realize that certain animals were created to be eaten . (the bible says it and our teeth say it too why can it cut meat? why is it tasty ? if it was dangerous god wouldn’y make it tasty)so eat like i told you and no regret , it’s weird to have to kill anilmals i know, but god’s ways our not our ways.

I agree with what others here have said: stop relying on processed foods and start eating closer to nature. Only in this way will you be able to start enjoying what real food tastes like. Whole, ripe, raw, organic fruits and vegetables are delicious in their uncooked, unrefined, unadulterated form. The problem is that we are accustomed to eating foods that are highly processed, overcooked, and drenched in sugar, oil, and salt. Give your palate an opportunity to cleanse itself and break away from all of these addictive and unhealthful substances. I’m not saying you need to eat a completely raw diet, but the closer you come to eating whole plant foods as opposed to overly processed and refined foods, the sooner your taste buds will adjust to what is wholesome, healthful, and naturally delicious.
If you’re still eating dairy, that is not only making you ill, but keeping you from adopting a healthier diet and feeling well. And yes, tofu on its own is at best bland and tasteless, and at worst, pretty yucky. But it’s also a somewhat processed food and not one you need to rely on heavily to meet any of your nutritional needs. The marvelous thing about tofu is that it will take on the flavor of the sauces or sweeteners it’s cooked with. (For example, you can make delectable chocolate pudding with tofu.) But I’m not advocating that you depend on it. It is a transitional food.
My favorite book for transitioning to a more healthful plant-based diet with minimal effort is How to Eat Like a Vegetarian Even If You Never Want to Be One. It makes shopping, preparing, and enjoying all-plant-based meals simple and delicious. The McDougall Quick & Easy Cookbook offers over 300 recipes that are low-fat and can be prepared in less than 30 minutes. (Dr. McDougall’s recipes do contain tofu, soy sauce and spices, and are high in flavor.) If you want to learn how to lean towards a low-fat raw vegan diet, I recommend The 80/10/10 Diet by Dr. Douglas Graham.
Eating a plant-based diet is not about deprivation. It’s a celebration—of taste, texture, and color. Processed foods are there to help you transition, but are never to be considered the basis of a healthful diet. If once in a while you feel like eating ice cream, reach for a container of Purely Decadent made with coconut milk. If you occasionally crave pizza, make yourself one with Follow Your Heart or Daiya Mozzarella cheese alternative. And if you enjoy eating Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Italian, or any other cuisine, google "vegan" and the dish you desire, and you are likely to come up with lots of great recipes. (Two of my favorite sources are http://veganyumyum.com and http://fatfreevegan.com)
As a food coach, I am always saddened to find that without guidance, many people endeavoring to adopt a healthy plant-based diet begin to feel disillusioned, deprived, and even worse, unwell. Please know that the more whole, ripe, raw, organic, whole fruits and vegetables you incorporate into your diet, the more you will begin to enjoy eating what is most natural for us and the better you will begin to feel. And know that there is a world of support out there for you. Websites like http://vegsource.com offer a plethora of expert guidance, information, and inspiration, and there are vegetarian/vegan meetup groups, organizations, conferences, and expos in large and small communities all over the world.
