i have to change my diet…HELP?

Okay i get really sick on my periods (like i can hardly get up and threwing up everywhere)
Well my doctor gave me birth control and told me i need to drastically change my diet
Well i may live in NY but my family is from GA and cooks soul food
So how do i ask my mom to change it??
because she heard the doctor but she says he doesn’t know what he’s talking about
so what are some little things i can eat or drink to help me out?
also why won’t my mom listen and be like okay???

no i’m not fat i’m 5′4 135pounds
(sorry i know i posted this question but i need more)
no i honestly don’t want to be on a all veg diet lol
(no offense to anybody that does it)

OMG! I had something like this when I was young. Mine was that I had such horrible cramps I’d get sick and toss. The doctor didn’t give me birth control pills. He thought the kind of hormones in them may make hormone balance worse. He said to take soy pills. So I took them, and they helped alot. I was like "thank God I don’t throw up and have pain like that anymore". Since I started studying nutrition I’ve learned that flaxseed and flaxseed oil (found in pill form) can help with hormones. As far as Diet, I would suggest lotsof veggies and fruits. Eat some grains, nuts, beans, and/or tofu for protein. Fruits seem to help me when I’m on my period. I love watermelon (it has iron, which you can lose on your period) and strawberries. Strawberries are know to help with periods. Also chamomile tea.
Hope I helped some.

Cut out dairy. You shouldn’t give me thumbs down for saying ‘cut out dairy.’

If you were to cut it out you would see remarkable changes for the better.

If you’re not willing to be on an all-veg diet than I why are you posting this question here? Speaking as someone who suffered a multitude of minor health problems before I went veg that virtually disappeared in a matter of weeks, I cannot with a clear conscience advocate anything else.

I’m sorry your mom isn’t listening to you! Personally (and I’m no expert), I think you should avoid foods that are too spicy, acidic, and/or rich…but you probably already know all of that. I know someone who had to change her diet because of something like this, and she got better after she started eating a lot of pasta and yogurt (the probiotic kind, like Activia), and drinking decaf tea, especially green tea. Also, you might want to look into some "super foods" like blueberries and salmon. Try avoiding caffeine and carbonated beverages. Soda, coffee, and alcohol can be terrible on stomachs!
I hope this helps, and get well soon!

First, I’m assuming the doctor told you to change your diet since s/he put you on birth control pills (which increases the risk for blood clots, etc, and that risk can be made worse by having arteries that are clogged with cholesterol/fat).
In that case, you could try to get your mom to feed you (or feed yourself) foods that are lower in fat (and excess sugar or simple carbohydrates like "white bread", white rice, etc which can do the same thing)….and btw real "soul food" should include a lot of good veggies and greens, which would all great for you. At the very least, you could just eat *less* of the fatty meats, refined breads, etc., at meals and eat *more* of the veggies, etc. (she’d probably be willing to make a little more of the veggies when cooking).

If your mom is unaware of the risks of taking birth control pills, especially on a high fat diet, etc, read up on it and explain or show her some of the info online, etc, or have the doc explain:

On the other hand, I might suggest seeing another GYN who would try to control your periods in another way besides birth control pills, or at least try you on the patch before the pill (which is absorbed less into the blood stream).

You might really end up needing a birth control pill solution, but doing other things like, for example, taking ibuprofen/Motrin before periods and during the worst part can help reduce the production of "prostaglandins" –and pain, etc.

And sometimes regularly taking magnesium and vitamin B6 can help too.

There are also pills (Seasonale, etc) that make women have only 3-4 periods per year, and that’s also good for those who turn out to have endometriosis (lots of pain, bleeding, etc) because the more periods of that type they have, the more likely the periods will lead to fertility problems…it may not be that different in the blood clot dept though:

    Good luck!

I found cutting out caffeine and sugary foods helped a lot. It took about four months for the improvement to kick in.

well, maybe losing a few pounds will help. im 5′3 and 102 pounds, and I never get sick. Don’t eat a lot of rich foods (high in fat content), eat lots of things that are green and leafy, eat only lean meats, don’t eat butter or alot of carbs. hope this helps:)
