starting an exercise routine - supplements: good or bad?
i’m about to start an exercise routine - again. nothing too hectic, i’ll just be doing some running and some toning exercises. a friend of mine has suggested some supplements, all of them thermogenics. phedra cut from usn, phenadrine from biogen and cla thermo from usn. which is the better out of these three, or is there something else that anyone could suggest?

i suggest you just go for natural. food such as eggs, skinless chicken, fruit and vegetables, nuts you could complement this with a multivitamin tablet. and drink plenty of milk and water. don’t rely on supplements as they are pricey scams over rated by the media.

Vitamin Supplements have been a hot topic on the news lately. Have you seen it? I’ve been a long believer in wholefood supplements rather than a ‘one vitamin’ supplement such as taking Vitamin C’s or B12’s. Researchers are actually finding that by eating a full orange rather than just the extracted Vitamin C you will feel far more health benefits. I found this example at http://www.netdoctor.co.uk:

    Apples and pills

Take apples: they are a rich source of vitamin C, which builds up the immune system. But when researchers at Cornell University in New York compared the effects of apples and vitamin C tablets, the results were quite startling.

The apples contained many other naturally occurring chemicals in addition to vitamin C, including antioxidants called flavanoids and polyphenols that are thought to protect against cancer.

This meant that eating a small apple (100g) gave an antioxidant effect equivalent to taking 1500mg of vitamin C – and you’d have to take a mega-dose supplement to achieve that.

One of the study’s authors, Professor Chong Yong Lee, said: ‘Some of the chemicals we found in apples are known to be anti-allergenic, some are anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral. Now I have a reason to say an apple a day keeps the doctor away.’

In contrast, a 2004 Cochrane review of studies found there was not enough evidence that 2000mg vitamin C supplements prevented colds in the general population. More recently, the US Women’s Health Study found a link between vitamin C supplements and an increased risk of hardening arteries in some people with diabetes.

YES! They are actually saying that taking a vitamin that is separated from it’s natural environment can even harm you. If you are one of those people that enjoys your junkfood on the pretense of taking vitamins to be healthy than you have to start changing your thought patterns. You need to eat whole foods and whole food supplements. And if you are somebody that eats healthy and takes vitamins to supplement your health you also need to start thinking differently. We need to get as much nutrition as we can from the food we choose to eat and take whole food supplements to supplement what we can get naturally.

and this is for your question

The following are some of the supplements that are allowed and tell how they can enhance an athlete not just an Olympiad’s performance.

    Creatine
Creatine is a nutrient that can improve strength and power and may also help improve aerobic performance. No supplement has more scientific support than creatine. It works, which is why it has become so popular since it was first brought to the market in the early 1990s.

    Protein Supplements
Protein is an essential part of any program because it may enhance training to improve your performance. Athletes need more than the Recommended Daily Allowance of protein. But it is advised they get it through a powder or sports bar instead of "regular" food, which would mean ingesting excess fat and calories.

    Hydation Drinks
This is a Gatorade type drink and is very important because even a slight decline in hydration can negatively affect your performance.

The following are some of the banned substances that all athletes should avoid:

    EPO
This is a drug that enhances your performance by increasing your red blood cell count. The more red blood cells you have the more oxygen is going to your muscles meaning you can work out harder and longer. It is very dangerous and can result in cardiac failure and dramatically increase blood pressure.

    Prohormones
These also go by the name Andros. It is a steroid and people need to understand that just because it’s over-the-counter it’s not safe. You may remember that baseball player Mark McGwire admitted to taking these a few years ago. Surprisingly there is little evidence that prohormones do anything to enhance your performance.

I suggest you DON’T take any supplements because most of them are hard on the liver. Anything you want can be found in food. (i.e. If you want protein, drink milk or soy milk, eat different kind of nuts and beans, meat and eggs. If you want energy, eat bananas, grains and even protein filled foods).

If you MUST take supplements, I suggest Ensure (it’s a supplement drink that actually taste like a milkshake). It’s won’t be hard on your system, it’s full of vitamins and other nutrients, it’s rich enough to give you energy and it fills you up. What else could you ask for?

I almost forgot…when excercising, you should drink ‘’sports drinks” like Gatorade etc. It actually REALLY helps!
